Greenhouse Time

The search continues for the right greenhouse here at Wyoming Organic Garden.   The last 2 weeks I have been watching the New Yankee Workshop (  http://www.newyankee.com/getproduct.php?911  ) as Norm has been building a wood and polycarbonate panel beauty.   I have ordered the plans with the DVD even though I recorded the show.  (OCD)    It is always easiest and cheapest to just order the plans and even the DVD and never get around to the actual building.  You can spend less than 50 dollars and sort of "scratch-the-itch" without going full out and spending thousands.

The seed catalogs have been coming fast and furious the last few months making the need and want for the greenhouse even stronger.   I am unable to pass up a rack of seeds at the store and a stack of seed catalogs sets next to the bed.  Every night is spent looking and planning and checking it all against the farmers almanac and the garden plans on graph paper.    My addiction is so bad that my girlfriend suggested that I tape a pack of seeds to my arm as a patch so I could quit.

Time to place those seed orders.

January Moon - WY HWY 310 to Lovell

The moon belongs to everyone...
The best things in life they're free.
Stars belong to everyone...
They cling there for you and for me.
Flowers in spring.
The robins that sings.
The sunbeams that shine.
They're yours and they're mine.
All of the good things.
Every one of the better things.
The best.
Best things in life
They're free.

A beautiful song written by Irving Berlin in 1923.

2011

Enough time off already...   The holidays are now completed (we celebrated Christmas yesterday - long story) and it is now time to head back to the garden - thank goodness!

I had the good fortune of dropping  in on the Montana Green Expo last week.  There were many tree, seed, and equipment companies to visit with and pickup catalogs and website addresses.    I have been wanting to add a "green" roof to my shop and also build a Little House on the Prairie playhouse/tool shed also complete with a "green" roof.  So it was nice to find this company  -- http://www.liveroof.com/  What I didn't realize is that it makes a big difference what plants you choose.  I just - naively - thought you planted grass or took up sod and put it on a plastic covered roof... but in today's technologically savvy world - that is not the case.   There are trays that snap together and  many more options for plant material.   I hope you will go to the LIVEROOF website and check it out.   I will log my experiences and keep you posted!

We have gotten much snow the last 30 days.  Unusual for us.  The temperature has also been very cold... which is very normal.  The snow and the cold mixed together should allow for a great spring and winter isn't even over yet.   Perhaps there will be more snow yet.

I hope to have a greenhouse up and running soon planted with baby lettuce, spinach, beets and other micro greens.  Growing and harvesting and eating with savory homemade dressings.  The other vegetables that will be transplanted in the garden later will need to be started soon too.  It will be nice to have a greenhouse instead of the shelves and grow lights that I normally use to get started.

FYI - One way to brighten and shorten winter is to stop by a greenhouse and purchase some rosemary, basil, or thyme, growing in a pot, to take home to cook with.
