2011

Enough time off already...   The holidays are now completed (we celebrated Christmas yesterday - long story) and it is now time to head back to the garden - thank goodness!

I had the good fortune of dropping  in on the Montana Green Expo last week.  There were many tree, seed, and equipment companies to visit with and pickup catalogs and website addresses.    I have been wanting to add a "green" roof to my shop and also build a Little House on the Prairie playhouse/tool shed also complete with a "green" roof.  So it was nice to find this company  -- http://www.liveroof.com/  What I didn't realize is that it makes a big difference what plants you choose.  I just - naively - thought you planted grass or took up sod and put it on a plastic covered roof... but in today's technologically savvy world - that is not the case.   There are trays that snap together and  many more options for plant material.   I hope you will go to the LIVEROOF website and check it out.   I will log my experiences and keep you posted!

We have gotten much snow the last 30 days.  Unusual for us.  The temperature has also been very cold... which is very normal.  The snow and the cold mixed together should allow for a great spring and winter isn't even over yet.   Perhaps there will be more snow yet.

I hope to have a greenhouse up and running soon planted with baby lettuce, spinach, beets and other micro greens.  Growing and harvesting and eating with savory homemade dressings.  The other vegetables that will be transplanted in the garden later will need to be started soon too.  It will be nice to have a greenhouse instead of the shelves and grow lights that I normally use to get started.

FYI - One way to brighten and shorten winter is to stop by a greenhouse and purchase some rosemary, basil, or thyme, growing in a pot, to take home to cook with.
